The South Burlington law firm of Johnson & Perkinson presented a check for $100,000 to Good News Garage, a program of Lutheran Social Services (LSS) . The money will be used to support the mission of Good News Garage, which provides reliable transportation options for families in need.

Johnson & Perkinson specialize in securities, anti-trust and consumer class-action litigation on behalf of injured investors and consumers.  The firm is distributing this donation as a part of an agreement to settle a lawsuit against five major automotive paint manufacturers for alleged price fixing.

Auto body shops and others who bought paint from the companies will get the bulk of the $780,000 settlement, Johnson said. But in many cases, it is hard to determine how much money should go to indirect buyers of the paint, like the customers of auto body repair shops.

Due to the fact that administrative costs associated with making payments directly to the injured parties would exceed the amount of the settlement proceeds, the court directed that the funds be utilized for the benefit of the community in a manner related to the allegedly illicit conduct. Good News Garage was chosen as the beneficiary.

“Repairing donated cars does require us to fundraise,” states Carmen George, marketing and development manager, “financial contributions are critical to allowing us to continue our programs”
