How to Receive a Car
All applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Full-time employment or legitimate job offer on company letterhead
- Must not already own/insure a vehicle in CT
- Sufficient income to pay for ongoing vehicle maintenance, repairs, insurance and taxes
- Commute shows significant difficulty:
- An hour or more each way
- Two or more transfers
- Client works 2nd or 3rd shift
- No access to public transportation
- Demonstrate the motivation and maturity necessary to own and operate a vehicle, including but not limited to:
- Must not owe any motor vehicle taxes
- Must not have been convicted of driving under the influence (DUI)
- Must not have any open traffic violations
Applicants are required to complete/show proof of the following documentation:
- Household budget
- Employment verification
- Children/Spouse information sheet
- Any additional documents to support the applicant's need for a vehicle
Programs Available
New Haven Residents
We are now taking applications for licensed drivers and no longer accepting applications for new drivers. If you live in New Haven you must meet the following additional criteria:
- Live within the Empowerment Zone of New Haven (visit www.empowernewhaven.org to see if you live in the zone)
- Currently employed full time for at least 3 months, with at least 35 hours a week
- Hold a valid Connecticut drivers's license
