Giving the gift of transportation

Sharon Ernest, of North Adams, received a 2010 Hyundai Tucson from Good News Garage, a local car-donation charity that awards cars to families in need.

The North Adams woman recently received, free of charge, a 2010 Hyundai Tucson, courtesy of the Good News Garage. Since 1996, the New England charity has awarded refurbished, donated vehicles to 5,000 recipients in the six-state region who otherwise couldn't afford to buy a car.
Good News Garage works with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission to seek out people in the commonwealth needing a personal vehicle.
"A lack of transportation is one of the biggest reasons why people cannot achieve upward mobility. Good News Garage's ability to help our neighbors in need is only limited by the amount of vehicle donations it receives," Tom Kupfer, spokesman for the nonprofit, told County Fare.
